Writing About Art

This guide will help you find resources for your assignment in which you research a work fo art from the Ackland Art Museum and explore the mythological or relgious meanings of the work.

Find Images

Images of some of the objects in the Ackland study gallery are available through the Ackland website.

  • ARTstor
    Use ARTstor to find images of other artworks that are related to the object you are researching from the Ackland Art Museum.

Evaluating Sources

Here are a few criteria that you could consider in order to determine whether or not an article, book, or website is of a quality worthy of inclusion in your research assignment (e.g., paper, presentation, etc.).

It's advised that you locate broader information related to your topic before finding articles that may be much more narrowly focused.  Use the Library's catalog to locate books.  Once you find books on your topic, remember to refer to the bibliographies you find in books for additional sources (articles, books, etc.).

  • Art Full Text
    A core database for art and art historical research, covering almost 400 publications. International in scope.
    Provides good cross-disciplinary coverage of art related topics. Please note that this database does not typically include articles published within the last few years.
