Additional Import Filters

Some resources, such as ClinicalTrials.gov, may not automatically have an Import filter in EndNote.  You can search for individual filters on the EndNote website or add all additional filters through EndNote's filter zipped file

Download and save the filter or folder of filters.  Open your EndNote program folder.  You should see a folder in it labeled Filters. Drag and drop the filter(s) into the Filters folder.  The next time you import a file, these filters should be available to you.

Exporting References from UNC-CH Library Catalog

Mac Users: When working with EndNote on a Mac, you must use Mozilla Firefox as your browser to enable Direct Export (automatic downloads) of references from electronic databases (PubMed, Web of Science, etc.) to your EndNote library.

  1. Conduct a search in UNC-CH Library Catalog.
  2. Click on the title of the record that you wish to export to your EndNote library.

    Export from Individual Record

  3. If you want to export more than one reference, click Add to folder icon next to each result you want to save.  When you do this the folder tab on the box at the top of the page will show the number of items you have added to your folder.  To view items in your folder, click on the folder tab.

    Export from Folder

  4. Once you have chosen your references, click on the EndNote (file) link, which will be in the column on the right of your screen, whether you are viewing an individual record or your folder.
  5. A dialog box will appear prompting you to either "Open" or "Save" the text file that you are creating. Choose the Open with button and select EndNote X7 from the drop-down menu. If you do not see EndNote X7 on the drop-down shortlist, select Other and choose EndNote X6 from the options provided.  Then, click the OK button.

    Open with Endnote

  6. Your citations will automatically appear in your EndNote library.  If you do not already have EndNote open, your computer will open your EndNote library.

Important: Check all citations for accuracy prior to sorting into groups.

Importing References from a PDF File or Folder

Note: You can convert PDF files or folders stored on your desktop or an external storage device into EndNote references.  The system utilizes Digital Object Identifiers (DOI) to capture bibliographic data, so this method will not work for older articles.

  1. Open the EndNote library into which you wish to import your references.
  2. Click on the File menu and select Import > File or Folder, depending on whether you want to import a single PDF file or an entire folder with PDFs. The Import File dialog box will appear.
  3. Click on Choose and select the file or folder that you wish to import.
  4. Under Import Option, select PDF from the drop-down menu.
  5. Under Duplicates, it is recommended that you select Discard Duplicates from the drop-down menu.  This will import all references except duplicates.
  6. Click on Import when you have finished.

  7. New references(s), with the PDF document attached, will automatically appear in your EndNote library.

Entering References Manually

  1. Open the EndNote library into which you wish to add a reference.
  2. In the toolbar along the top, click on the New Reference button . Alternatively, click on the References menu and select New Reference.  This will open the New Reference window.  Select a Reference Type from the drop-down menu at the top of the window.  Reference Type affects how bibliographic information is displayed in a citation.
  3. Enter the bibliographic information for your reference in the Fields provided.  Enter as much information as you have available.  Do not include special formatting and punctuation when you enter bibliographic information into EndNote.  The exception to this rule are the Author, Editor and Edition fields.

Author and Editor: Enter one name per line.  Names can be entered either with the last name followed by a comma and the first name, or the first name followed by the last name.  Enter full names whenever possible.  If entering initials, place period or space between initials.

    Edition: Enter as 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.

  4. Once you have completed entering the bibliographic information, Save your new reference by selecting File > Save or, Ctrl + S on your keyboard.  Your new reference will now be in your library and you can close the New Reference window.
