If you are presenting to or writing for a group external to UNC, please check with them regarding fair use policies. Many commercial uses of images (uses where you make money) are not allowed under Fair Use guidelines.
Images: Finding Them, Working With Them
- Finding Medical Images & Films (UNC HSL)HSL librarians compiled this guide to help you find images relevant to your program or specialty. Disciplines included are public health, dentistry, history of medicine, and eight different medical specialties.
- Finding and Using Media Objects (UNC HSL)This older site, which still has useful information, as created by former HSL Education Media Specialist Bob Ladd. It is intended to help faculty, students and others find sources of free or inexpensive digital media content, such as medical images, audio, and video, and discusses issues related to the use and reuse of digital media content.

Software Support
There are many different programs that can be used for image editing. Here are a few that the MDS team recommends:
- Adobe Photoshop is the industry standard for imaging professionals, but it is challenging to use and expensive.
- Adobe Photoshop Elements is an excellent, user friendly program that has much of the power of Photoshop.
- iPhoto is an easy-to-use image editing program for the Macintosh. It comes free with every new Macintosh computer.
- Picasa is free photo editing software from Google.
Adobe products are available to UNC students for free through UNC ITS Software Distribution. If you're a first time Photoshop user, try out our Introduction to Photoshop online tutorial in order to learn the basics.
