Davis Library Carrel Information

Who may apply?
- Registered graduate students are eligible for assignment to graduate carrels for a maximum of three continuous years.
- Undergraduates writing an Honors Thesis may be eligible for assignment to an open cubicle for a maximum of two semesters.
The following list prioritizes those individuals eligible for a carrel:
- PhD candidates writing dissertations
- Masters students writing theses
- PhD candidates preparing for qualifying exams
- Masters students preparing for qualifying exams
- PhD candidates completing coursework
- Masters students completing coursework [including MBA and Law]
- Honors Students
- Others, when space allows
Library Data Services
Library Data Services caters to researchers interested in working with data, mapping, texts, visualization, and technology. Many of these services are available online. Davis Library Data Services, located on the second floor of Davis Library, offers:
- A computing lab with specialized software for GIS and data visualization & analysis.
- Walk-in assistance provided by knowledgeable student consultants during set hours.
- Consultations with specialists for more in-depth inquiries (by appointment).
- Spaces for collaboration and presentation, complete with white boards and external displays.
- Technology short courses and programs that promote digital scholarship.
Scholarly Communications Services
My role as Scholarly Communications Officer is to design and implement a program that will position the University Libraries to take full advantage of and contribute to the evolution of scholarly publishing practices within the academy. I provide guidance, policy development, and advocacy to faculty, students, and staff on the following issues:
- Copyright and fair use
- Authors' rights
- Privacy rights
- Open access
- Other information policy issues important to the creation and use of scholarly material

Open Access at UNC-Chapel Hill
Open Access publishing is a movement that makes scholarly content available free of charge. The UNC Libraries support open access, open archives, and open repositories as methods to encourage the widest possible access to scholarly content.
