Genomic Data Sharing Policy (2013 - Present)Expects sharing of large-scale human and non-human genomic data from NIH-funded studies through a publicly available data repository. All studies with human genomic data should be registered in dbGaP, and the data should be submitted to an
NIH-designated data repository. Non-human data may be submitted to any widely used data repository.
To comply with the GDS policy, NIH expects that investigators and institutions:
- Develop and provide a plan for sharing genomic data
- Provide an Institutional Certification form before the notice of award, if working with human data
- Share genomic data in a timely manner to an appropriate repository
- Responsibly use controlled-access data
- Appropriately cite controlled-access data in publications and presentations
Individual NIH Institutes, Centers, or Offices may have additional expectations - see GDS Policy Expectations by NIH Institute & Center resource below.
