Searching the UNC Catalog

Example of a scholarly book

To search for books by a literary author, search the catalog for the author as "Author." To search for books about a literary author, search for the author as "Subject."

Author: Du Bois, W. E. B. (William Edward Burghardt), 1868-1963.

Subject: Du Bois, W. E. B. (William Edward Burghardt), 1868-1963.

To find books on a particular topic use a keyword search to identify several relevant books.  Then look at the Full Records of these books to identify relevant Library of Congress Subject Headings to potentially expand your search. If no one subject heading contains all the elements of your search, you may still have identified the terminology of the subject indexing.  However, sometimes keyword may be superior.

Keyword: children's picture books

LCSH: Picture books for children.
