Pop-up book artists are also referred to as paper engineers. This page presents a selection of acclaimed paper engineers who produce outstanding pop-ups.

Robert Sabuda

Robert Sabuda was born in 1965 in the rural town of Pinckney, MI. As a child he loved books and all kinds of art, two passions which collided when he picked up a pop-up book in the dentist’s waiting room! He attended the Pratt Institute in New York City and is now one of the leading creators of pop-up books in the world, having three times been awarded the Meggendorfer Prize by the Movable Book Association of America.

Matthew Reinhart

Matthew Reinhart, born in Iowa in 1971, loved to draw as a child but decided to pursue a career in medicine instead. He kept taking art classes, however, and after meeting Robert Sabuda while doing volunteer work at a local community center, he was persuaded to follow his dream of becoming an artist. He attended the Pratt Institute and is now an acclaimed paper engineer for both his solo work and his collaborations with Sabuda.

Pam Pease

Pamela Pease is a local pop-up book creator based in Chapel Hill, NC. After a career as a sportswear designer in Los Angeles, she moved to New York to pursue a Master's degree in graphic design and illustration, which is when she became fascinated with book design and especially pop-ups. She is involved in all stages of the book-making process - concept, research, writing, illustration, design, paper engineering and publishing (she is the founder of Paintbox Press) - and spends about 2 years on each project. Her books range in subject from the Macy’s Day Thanksgiving Day Parade to the Tour de France and the Kentucky Derby.

David A. Carter

David A. Carter was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, and studied art and illustration at Utah State University. He learned paper engineering and pop -art design while working at Intervisual Communications Inc., where he also met his wife, Noelle, who has collaborated with him on several books. Carter is the creator of over fifty pop -up books.

Anouck Boisrobert & Louis Rigaud

Anouck Boisrobert and Louis Rigaud met at the School of Decorative Arts in Strasbourg, France. During a workshop on pop-up techniques they created a model of their first book, Popville. Since then they have created several other playful pop-up books. Anouck primarily focuses on the illustrations and graphic design aspect while Louis animates the designs with his paper engineering skills.

Becca Zerkin

Becca Zerkin is a paper engineer who offers workshops for kids and teachers. She previously worked for Matthew Reinhart for a number of years and have done projects for card, game, teacher materials, and multimedia companies. She lives locally in Chapel Hill. Movable Book Society

Movable Book Society

The Movable Book Society was organized in 1993 to provide a forum for collectors, artists, curators, book sellers, book producers, and others to share enthusiasm and exchange information about pop-up and movable books. The Society publishes a quarterly newsletter called Movable Stationery. At their biennial conference, the society awards two Meggendorfer Prizes for outstanding paper engineering to the artist/paper engineer who has produced the most outstanding commercially published pop-up or movable book issued in the two preceding years.
