Welcome to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. We are glad that you have joined the Carolina family! The campus libraries are here to support inquiry and learning at the university, and library staff are dedicated to connecting users to Carolina’s rich and complex library system.
This page provides a starting point for the use of UNC libraries by military-affiliated students, whether actively serving or veterans, and their family members. Below, you will find a list of library resources and services that will help you make the most of your time on and off campus.
If you have questions, or would like additional information about any of our library services, please contact us.
Instructors can put books, magazines, and journals, as well as digital materials, on hold for their classes at the library. Look up reserves for your courses here. Some reserves materials can only be used in the library where they are located. Most reserves have a limited checkout period–some are just a few hours, while others are 24 or 48 hours.
As a student, you can visit and borrow books from any of the Triangle Research Libraries: Duke, NC State, and NC Central. Your UNC OneCard is also your library card at these locations.
Renew print materials online, up to three times. (DVDs and Reserves items can only be renewed in person.)
If UNC doesn’t have the book you want, you can also request books or journal articles from other academic libraries online. You don’t need to know which other libraries own the materials, only the title and other identifying information. Books will be delivered to the UNC library location of your choice; articles will be delivered electronically as PDFs. You can also request electronic copies of articles that UNC has only in print. Interlibrary loan materials may also have different checkout periods than UNC materials.
Chat with a librarian from anywhere. Look for the “Contact Us” button in the upper right-hand corner of any UNC library page.
At any point during a research project or assignment, you can request a meeting with one of our research librarians. Fill out the form and someone will contact you to make the appointment. You will be matched with the UNC librarian who can best meet your research needs, and the duration and frequency of the appointments is something that you and the librarian will determine together.
