Business & Corporate Case Law Database To access this database from Lexis+’s homepage, under the Explore Content heading choose Practice Area or Industry and then Business & Corporate Law.

Browsing Business Topics within Lexis: You may also browse by more narrow business and corporate topics in Lexis. Click on Browse in the top-left of the homepage, then Topic > Business & Corporate Law or Business & Corporate Compliance. You can then narrow your case law search to a particular area, such as closely-held corporations or foreign corporations.

Westlaw Edge

Corporations Cases: Search for federal and state case law by applying filters on the Westlaw Edge homepage. From the homepage, choose to browse Cases. This page provides you with multiple ways of filtering your search – by jurisdiction or topic. If you select Corporations, you can then search by jurisdiction in cases dealing with business and corporations law.

West’s Key Number System: You can also search for cases via West’s Key Number System. Corporations and Business Organizations is Key Number 101 in the West system. It is broken down into topics such as capital and stock, shareholders and members, and mergers, acquisitions, and reorganizations. A full listing of corporations and business organizations keys can be found here.

Corporate Opinions and Dockets: From Bloomberg Law’s homepage, click on Browse > Practice Centers > Corporate, and then find the Dockets & Opinions section of the page. Bloomberg has federal and state dockets and opinions available.

North Carolina Business Court Opinions

The North Carolina Business Court, a specialized forum of the superior court division, hears complex and significant  corporate and commercial law issues in North Carolina. You can search Business Court opinions on the North Carolina Judicial Branch website.

In 2014, the North Carolina legislature enacted the Business Court Modernization Act, which refined, clarified and expanded the types of actions that may be designated to the Business Court by any party. Qualifying cases must involve a material issue in at least one of several categories:

  • concerning corporations, partnerships, and limited liability companies,
  • securities law,
  • antitrust law or unfair competition law,
  • trademark law,
  • trade secret law, or
  • commercial contract law actions involving an amount in controversy of at least $1,000,000

Deleware Court of Chancery Opinions

The Delaware Court of Chancery is widely recognized as the nation's preeminent forum for the determination of disputes involving the internal affairs of the thousands of Delaware corporations, LLCs and other business entities. More than half the companies traded on the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ, as well as 60 percent of Fortune 500 companies, are incorporated in Delaware.
