University Libraries Learning YouTube: Video Creation Best Practices

Guidelines for Videos

Here are some general guidelines for creating usable instructional videos.

  • Keep it short! Videos shorter than six minutes long have been shown to have the highest level of engagement. More information in the Length of Video section.
  • Think about your surroundings and prepare them for recording. Consider background noise and lighting. More information in the Preparing Your Surroundings section.
  • Use a script or a storyboard. Planned videos are more likely to be succinct and present well-defined concepts. More information in the Scripts and Storyboards section.

It is strongly recommended that you include branded elements provided by the University Libraries Communications department. Adding the University Libraries logo at the end of your video or utilizing a University Libraries branded PowerPoint connects your work to the University Libraries and builds brand recognition. These branded elements are available in the Logos and PowerPoints section.
