Online Statistical Information for the UNC Law Community

This site includes statistics compiled by the US Trustees Program. Statistics provided include the data from closed Chapter 7 cases with assets as well as civil enforcement activity in four major areas: general civil enforcement, case administration, creditor abuse, and debtor identification.

The BJA is a component of the U.S. Department of Justice and supports programs and initiatives in the areas of law enforcement, justice information sharing, countering terrorism, managing offenders, combating drug crime and abuse, adjudication, advancing tribal justice, crime prevention, protecting vulnerable populations, and capacity building. This site includes reports on drug courts, a report on crime analysis assessment, and reports on using telehealth for behavioral health in the criminal justice system in addition to many others.

A division of the U.S. Department of Justice, the Bureau of Justice Statistics' mission is to collect statistics on the criminal justice system. Their website contains a variety of crime-related statistics and reports, including data about corrections, courts, crime types, justice system employment and expenditures, law enforcement, and victims.

The federal Bureau of Prisons website contains inmate, prison population, and prison staff statistics in addition to other research and reports under the "Resources" tab. Users can also search for particular inmates that have been incarcerated since 1982 on either the home page or the "Find an Inmate" page under the "Inmates" tab.

[Available to UNC faculty, students, and staff] Data Planet Statistical Datasets provides easy access to an extensive repository of standardized and structured statistical data. The over 12.6 billion datasets in Data Planet provide immediate access to data presented in charts, maps, graphs, and table form, via multiple points of entry. Data comes from more than 70 U.S. and international sources including Bureau of Economic Analysis, Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, China Data Institute, Deutsche Borse Group, European Commission, the World Bank, and more. The site allows for searching by subject and subjects covered by the data include criminal justice and law. The time period covered varies.

The Department of Justice provides statistics on a wide variety of subjects. The component links on this site will help you find what you're looking for but you should also consider searching other Department of Justice websites to find exactly what you need. The site provides links to statistics from associations of the DOJ, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, the US Marshals Service, and the US Trustee Program.

The FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program consists of four data collections: The National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS), the Summary Reporting System (SRS), the Law Enforcement Officers Killed and Assaulted (LEOKA) Program, and the Hate Crime Statistics Program. The UCR Program publishes annual reports for each of these data collections and a preliminary semiannual report of summary data each winter, as well as special compilations on cargo theft, human trafficking, and NIBRS topical studies. The FBI's interactive Crime Data Explorer tool serves as the digital front door for UCR data, enabling law enforcement and the general public to more easily use and understand the massive amounts of UCR data currently collected.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program produces an annual report on hate crime statistics voluntarily collected and submitted by law enforcement. The 2019 hate crimes data, submitted by 15,588 law enforcement agencies, provide information about the offenses, victims, offenders, and locations of hate crimes. Note: this data is only for 2019, for prior years use https://ucr.fbi.gov/hate-crime

[Some datasets available only to UNC students, faculty, and staff.] Hosted by the ICPSR (an organization within the University of Michigan) and sponsored by the Bureau of Justice Statistics, the National Institute of Justice, and the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency prevention, this organization's web site collects and displays a wide variety of criminal justice data. The site has guides explaining some of their data collections. The National Archive of Criminal Justice Data does not publish its own analyses of the data. Users must create a free account in order to access the data. Users can also log in with their social media accounts. Most data requires a statistical package to view. Some data can be viewed online using the Survey Documentation and Analysis (SDA) program. Some data sets are restricted and require special permission to access. In addition, some data sets are available only to member institutions such as UNC-Chapel Hill.

This federally-funded resource provides criminal justice and drug-related information. The website has criminal justice data grouped by the following subtopics: Corrections, courts, crime, crime prevention, drugs, justice system, juvenile system, juvenile justice, law enforcement, and victims. The site also has an A-Z index for specific topics. In addition to data, the site also has a searchable Q & A knowledge base for specific questions.

The National Institute of Corrections (NIC) provides specialized services to corrections from a national perspective. This web page provides lists of resources related to local, state, and federal statistics. As reporting standards are not currently uniform across the nation, though, there may be gaps in the data presented.

Since 1978, NIJ has been accumulating an archive of hundreds of data sets resulting from projects funded through research grant programs. NIJ partners with two other Office of Justice Programs agencies, the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) and the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP), to support the National Archive of Criminal Justice Data (NACJD). Currently housed at the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research at the University of Michigan, NACJD provides access to a wide spectrum of data, including results from BJS and OJJDP survey series as well as original data from NIJ and OJJDP-funded research.

[Available to UNC faculty, students, and staff] Provides web-based access to United States Census data from 1790 to the present, and to other U.S. and international data, with the ability to make tables and interactive maps easily or export data for analysis. Crime data includes the most commonly used variables and geographies.

Compiled and managed by the staff of the Hindelang Criminal Justice Research Center at the University of Albany, this sourcebook collects and displays criminal justice data from a wide variety of sources. Subcategories include criminal justice characteristics, public opinion, crime/victims, courts/prosecution/sentencing, and parole/jail/prisons/death penalty.

This webpage lists states that have concealed handgun reciprocity with NC.

This site lists North Carolina crime statistics that are collected as part of the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting program. Depending on the year, the crime statistics include annual summary reports and other collections of data. The statistics date back to 1993, but the statistics collected did not become standardized until around 1999.

This website has data and reports regarding North Carolina juvenile crime statistics. This page includes links to annual county databooks dating back to 2004, recent fiscal statistics which include quick facts and annual reports (2000-2011, 2015), and legislative reports.

The site has data and statistics related to North Carolina juveniles. The County Databook includes data by county on offenses, admissions to facilities and community programs, supervision cases, and more. The site also has Legislative reports on a variety of topics including youth development centers and community programs.

The Dashboard was created by the North Carolina Division of Public Health to provide data on the impact of excessive alcohol drinking in the state. Topics include data on alcohol outlet density, alcohol consumption rates, immediate- and long-term impacts of excessive use, and cost to communities.

This site provides county-level and statewide Criminal/Infraction Reports based on prosecutorial district and multiple criminal case types including driver’s license revocations, felonies, impaired driving charges, and misdemeanor vehicle cases. Statistics on disposed criminal cases are also provided.

This page contains statistics about NC traffic stops by police dating back to August 2004. The data is organized by police department, and users can run several different types of reports.
