Media Law

This guide contains information and resources about media law.

What Is in This Guide?

Media Law

This guide is designed to familiarize users with the resources that may be used for conducting research into various areas of media law, such as Constitutional Law with First Amendment and Prior Restraint issues; Torts with defamation, invasion of privacy/right of privacy, and false light; Intellectual Property with copyright and trademark issues; Newsgathering with privilege/shield laws and public records/sunshine laws; and Administrative Law with FCC and FTC issues.

The references to primary law and secondary sources available in this guide have different levels of access. Some of the sources cited in this guide are freely available to anyone online. Others require UNC or UNC Law affiliation, sometimes in combination with a separate username and password for access to databases such as Westlaw, Lexis Advance, and Bloomberg Law. If you are a UNC Law faculty, student, or staff member and do not have access to these databases, please contact the UNC Law Library Reference Desk at 919-962-1194 or lawref@unc.edu
