Diversifying Repertoire: Introduction

This guide introduces search tools and strategies for finding pieces of music by under-represented composers in classical music.

Scope of LibGuide

This guide introduces search tools and strategies for finding pieces of music by under-represented composers in classical music. This is not a complete guide, but a starting point for expanding repertoire and pedagogical practices. The LibGuide is organized into the following sections:

1. Search Strategies

Techniques in searching the library catalog for under-represented composers.

2. Composer Databases and Lists

Use these databases and lists to find the names of pieces or composers you are interested in.

3. Music Theory and Education Resources

Journals, books and open access online resources for critical music theory and pedagogy.

4. Special Collections

Primary Sources at UNC and beyond that feature marginalized composers. While the focus of this LibGuide is mostly on classical music composers, there are many composers from other traditions. UNC Special Collections has many resources related to American Roots musicians and composers that may be relevant to your creative practice or research.

5. Other Online Resources

Additional resources that don't fit into the other categories of this guide.
