Organizational Learning & Leadership: Accessing Resources Remotely

Accessing Resources Remotely

Many library resources are fully accessible off campus. To access resources remotely, always start your search on the library website. If you navigate directly to a resource or database, you may hit a paywall. Starting from a page on the website - any page! - will ensure you have access to all the electronic resources available to UNC students.

Details for accessing specific materials are provided below.

Journal Articles

Accessing a Specific Article

To access a specific article, copy/paste the title in the main search bar on the library homepage. The results page will have two columns. The Articles+ column on the left side is where you may see a link to the article. If you do not see the article you're looking for, you may need to request it through Interlibrary Loan.

Browsing a Journal

To browse a journal's website, or to see if the library has a subscription to a specific journal, search for the title in our E-Journals page.

Searching in a Database

When using a database to search for articles, you should see a "Find @ UNC" link or a blue "Find@UNC" button underneath or next to article citations. These links will only appear if you started your search from a library webpage.

After you click on the link, you will either be directed to page where you can access the full text, or you will be directed to a page informing you that it isn't in our subscriptions. In the latter case, you can request the article through Interlibrary Loan.

Start on the library website even if you use Google Scholar.

Interlibrary Loan Requests for Articles

All UNC affiliates can make ILL requests for free. If you are using a database, you'll be directed to the ILL homepage where you can submit a request. You can also navigate directly to the ILL homepage to make a request. Patrons must create a free account to make ILL requests.

If another library is able to send our team an electronic copy of the article, you will receive an email when it has been processed. Articles are delivered digitally and you will be able to download the PDF in your ILL account page.

Books

Ebooks

You can search for ebooks in the library catalog. Many are downloadable as PDFs that do not need to returned.

Print Books

If you are a remote learner at UNC and find a book in UNC's stacks that you want to read, our team can mail it to you. In the catalog listing, click the blue "Request" button and follow the directions. Please note that this only applies to books in UNC's collection and only applies to UNC affiliates.

Interlibrary Loan Requests for Books

Ebooks are not shareable via ILL. You can make an ILL request for a chapter or section of a book and this will be delivered electronically, just like journal articles.

If you are able to visit the UNC campus, you can make an ILL request for a physical book and pick it up at one of our library locations.

Remote learners who are unable to visit the campus may wish to talk with their local public library about making interlibrary loan requests.

The Library is Online!

Many library services can be accessed remotely. These include:
