The digital humanities is widely-supported at UNC with diverse funding opportunities, expert support, and flexible spaces. 

UNC Funding and Expert Support

Funding
  • Arts & Humanities Research Grants
    The Arts & Humanities Research Grant awards range from $2,500 up to $7,500 for a one-year project.
  • Digital Humanities and Arts Curricular Incubation
    Up to $5000 in funding to support course development by graduate students with support from the Digital Innovation Lab, College of Arts and Sciences, Information Technology Services (ITS), Office of Arts and Sciences Information Services (OASIS), and UNC Libraries.
  • Humanities for the Public Good
    A variety of public humanities grants that may support digital humanities work.
Expert Support
  • Library Data Services
    Library Data Services caters to researchers interested in working with data, mapping, texts, visualization, and technology. Many of these services are available online. They offer: 
    • A computing lab with specialized software for GIS and data visualization & analysis.
    • Walk-in assistance provided by knowledgeable student consultants during set hours
    • Consultations with specialists for more in-depth inquiries (by appointment).
    • Spaces for collaboration and presentation, complete with white boards and external displays.
    • Technology workshops focused on working with data (manipulation, visualization, mapping).
  • Odum Institute
    The Odum Institute offers personal support for Qualitative Research, Quantitative Analysis, Mixed Method Analysis, Survey Research, Data Science, Cyberinfrastructure, Data Management, Qualtrics, Multimedia, and Transcription.
  • Digital Humanities and Arts Research Project Incubation
    Use the space and staff of the Digital Innovation Lab (DIL) with extra support from the College of Arts and Sciences, Information Technology Services (ITS), Office of Arts and Sciences Information Services (OASIS), and UNC Libraries.

Infrastructure

  • Carolina CloudApps
    A managed platform for developing and deploying web applications, provided by Information Technology Services.
  • Web.unc.edu
    Simple self-service web publishing at Carolina. UNC affiliates can create their own WordPress website at no charge. Provided by Information Technology Services.
  • Omeka
    A flexible, and open source web-publishing platform for the display of library, museum, archives, and scholarly collections and exhibitions. The University Libraries maintains an Omeka site for hosting student and faculty-created exhibits.
  • Carolina Digital Repository
    A long-term access and safekeeping for scholarly works, datasets, research materials, records, and audiovisual materials produced by the UNC-Chapel Hill community.

UNC Spaces

Davis Library
  • Library Data Services
    Library Data Services caters to researchers interested in working with data, mapping, texts, visualization, and technology. Many of these services are available online. Library Data Services is located on the second floor of Davis Library.
  • Odum Institute
    The Odum Institute supports social science teaching and research at UNC. They offer computer labs, a distance classroom, and a social computing room.
The Undergraduate Library
Greenlaw Hall
  • Digital Innovation Lab
    The Digital Innovation Lab features a collaboration and presentation space with a large screen display and flexible seating. The lab promotes a project-focused organizational model to stimulate digital humanities work for the public good.
Kenan Science Library
  • Kenan Science Library 
    The Kenan Science Library  offers a makerspace and equipment for 3D printing, 3D scanning, virtual reality, electronics and textiles, design, and modeling.
Health Sciences Library
  • Health Sciences Library 
    The Health Sciences Library (HSL) features a large presentation space as well as a collaboration center with a large screen display for video/web conferencing. Librarians at HSL are your partners at every stage of the research process, specializing in the tools, technologies, and information that researchers in the clinical and biomedical sciences use in their work.
