Library Data Services caters to researchers interested in working with data, mapping, texts, visualization, and technology. Many of these services are available online. Davis Library Data Services, located on the second floor of Davis Library, offers:
A computing lab with specialized software for GIS and data visualization & analysis.
Walk-in assistance provided by knowledgeable student consultants during set hours.
Consultations with specialists for more in-depth inquiries (by appointment).
Spaces for collaboration and presentation, complete with white boards and external displays.
Longitudinal survey data that include a standard ‘core’ of demographic, behavioral, and attitudinal questions, plus topics of interest. Includes online analysis capabilities.
International Census microdata from around the world, harmonized to be comparable across countries and years. Includes an online analysis component; alternately, users may download data to analyze them, but files will be very large. Because these are microdata, system also enables exploring constructed family inter-relationships, or drawing a structured sample.
Data on key national, political, economic, and demographic trends over time. Includes interactive data tools and summaries of key data points. Data are generally available six months after collection.
Provides web-based access to United States Census data from 1790 to the present, and to other U.S. and international data, with the ability to make tables and interactive maps easily or export data for analysis. Data include the most commonly used variables and geographies.

Includes classroom modules. UNC is an institutional member so its affiliates may also deposit research datasets free of charge to the individual.

Offers extensive database of opinion poll datasets. Roper’s iPOLL allows searching at the question level. The Center archives national opinion polls back to 1935, both U.S. and some international polls. Holdings include survey results data from academic, commercial and media survey organizations such as Gallup, Harris Interactive, Pew Research Associates, ABC, CBS, Wall Street Journal and many more. Many datasets are available for instant download in ASCII or SPSS format. Datasets not available for immediate download may be requested from the Center to be queued for digitization.
