Research & Reference Services

Whether you have a research paper and you don't know where to start or you want to find the full text of an article and you're not sure where to look, the service desk areas of Davis and the Undergraduate Library are the places to go. Reference librarians will guide you in the use of research tools and offer useful advice on retrieving information. Consulting with a librarian can save you valuable time in finding the information you need.

For a complete list of the ways in which you can access UNC-Chapel Hill Libraries reference and research services, please see our contact us page.

Circulation Services

At any library service desk you can:

  • Check out books, videos and other equipment.
  • Return library materials you have borrowed.
  • Recall a book that is currently checked out. This service is also available online through Carolina BLU.
  • Renew books (also available online through My Library), and pay overdue fines.
  • Reserve a group study room (in the Undergraduate, Davis, Health Sciences and Kenan Science Libraries)..

Your UNC One Card serves as your library card for UNC and TRLN Libraries. You must have it with you at the Service Desk to check out library materials.

Interlibrary Loan & Document Delivery Service

  • Carolina Blu (Brings the Library to U) is a delivery service that enables you to request on-campus delivery of materials. Campus delivery service allows you to have UNC-owned items delivered to other libraries on campus that are more convenient for you; you can also request to have articles that are not available online scanned and sent to you electronically.
  • Interlibrary Loan is a library service that students, faculty, and staff can use to request materials from other libraries. You must login with your Onyen to access the online form. First-time users will be asked to register in order to use this service.
  • TRLN is a network of libraries, including UNC, Duke University, North Carolina Central University, and North Carolina State University, which allow you to borrow from their collections. If you fill your request through their webpages your materials will be delivered to UNC in about 2-4 business days. Orders from other institutions can take several weeks to fill, so make your requests as early in the research process as possible.

Course Reserves

Course Reserves refers to supplemental course materials, such as sample tests or readings from books and articles, which are made available to students. Many of the reserve materials are digitized and available online via the library's E-Reserves system on the Course Reserves page (Onyen login required).

For items that have not been digitized, Davis Library, as well as many other UNC libraries, maintain print reserves collections. To access print reserves, you need to go to the library catalog to look up the appropriate call number, visit the library listed in the catalog, and then scan, photocopy, or check out the materials you need.
