Library MakerSpace: Sewing

Sewing Overview

What Is a Sewing Machine?

A sewing machine is a device made to sew fabric or other materials together using thread. A typical household sewing machine, like the one we have in the Library MakerSpace, is called a lockstitch sewing machine. A lockstitch sewing machine has an upper thread running from a spool on top of the machine and a lower thread (known as a bobbin) in a compartment below the material. As you press on the foot pedal, the machine lowers the needle through the material and into the lower compartment, where the upper and lower threads lock together, which creates the lockstitch.

We have one Janome sewing machine available for use in the Library MakerSpace. The Janome offers 15 popular utility stitches and a built-in buttonhole, as well as a top-loading bobbin system, built-in threading guide, and a side thread cutter.

Walk-ins Welcome

There is no formal reservation system in place to use the sewing machine and it is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. If it is your first time using the sewing machine, we ask that you fill out a provided liability form and complete a short, in-person orientation with the staff present.

Sewing Machine Safety

Sewing Machine Usage and Safety Considerations

  • Ensure the needle is correct for your project.
  • Keep loose clothing and jewelry away from the machine.
  • Keep hands away from the moving needle.
  • Do not force fabric. The machine will guide your work. Your only job is to keep it on a straight path.
  • Remove the plug from the socket when changing needles and removing the bobbin case.

If injury occurs, students should contact Campus Health Services @ (919) 966-2281. Faculty/Staff should contact the University Employee Occupational Health Clinic @ (919) 966-9119. For minor injuries, ask a staff member for the first aid kit.
