Using LibGuides: Create a New Guide

Create a Guide From Scratch

To create a new guide, go to the LibGuides homepage and select Create Guide in the LibGuide Shortcuts Box.

  • To create a blank guide, use the Choose Layout or Reuse dropdown menu to select 'Start Fresh'.
  • Give your guide a descriptive title. See Guide Groups and Templates for proper guide naming conventions.
  • Select the appropriate type for your guide. Learn more about Guide Types.
  • Next, select the group your guide should be added to.  See Guide Groups and Templates for guide group descriptions, or contact Nora Burmeister to discuss the appropriate group.
    • For Academic Process, Course, Subject, Current Topic, Librarian Profile, HSL Academic Process and Internal Staff groups, there is no need to select a template from the dropdown options. Template will be inherited from group settings.
    • For Data Service, Design & Creation, Collections, HSL Professionals groups, select a guide template with a title that matches the group assignment. For example, if creating a Data Services guide, select either the Data Service - 1 column, or the Data Service - 2 column template.
      • NOTE: If selecting a 1 column template, you will need to add a page for contact information, as there will be no sidebar to display librarian contact info. See Digitized Historical Maps as an example. 
  • In the Share Guide Content toggle, select Internal if you want your guide to be shared as a reusable template for other UNC Chapel Hill Libraries' LibGuide owners. Select No if you do not want your guide to be reusable.

Create a Copy of a Template Guide

To create a new guide, go to the LibGuides homepage and select Create Guide in the LibGuide Shortcuts Box.

  • To create a modifiable copy of a template guide (a group specific guide with pre-existing boxes for you to modify, use the Choose Layout or Reuse dropdown to select 'Copy content/layout from an existing guide'. 
  • Select Local Guides to restrict your options to UNC Libraries' guides. 
  • Type in *** to see available template guides, and select the appropriate one for your guide. 
  • Click the Copy Assets checkbox to make unique copies of guide content so you can make changes to your guide without impacting the template content.
  • Give your guide a descriptive title. See Guide Groups and Templates for proper guide naming conventions.
  • Select the appropriate type for your guide. Learn more about Guide Types.
  • Next, select the group your guide should be added to. See Guide Groups and Templates for guide group descriptions, or contact Nora Burmeister to discuss the appropriate group.
  • In the Share Guide Content toggle, select Internal if you want your guide to be shared as a reusable template for other UNC Chapel Hill Libraries' LibGuide owners. Select No if you do not want your guide to be reusable.
